The part of the city that surrounds to the port
is coverall of medieval time. It is formed by a maze of more or less narrow
side streets. It is filled with palaces, small palaces and immigrants;
this is one of the most charming zones of the city as well as most dangerous
one.
At night it is not recommended to be lost for their alleys, especially
women alone, although with some precautions it can be found charmers corners
confused between the dirt and the darkness.
The Duomo is located in this zone: the Gothic cathedral of San Lorenzo,
in which, in the XIIIth century, they rested the remainders of San Juan
Baptist, that has own chapel of the Renaissance epoch.
Once, after a horrible storm, the Genoese removed its remainders in procession
by the city to appease al Sea. Since then and each 24 of June (San Juan)
is celebrated a procession in its honour.
Inside the Duomo it is possible to access to the Treasure of Genoa, a
small gallery excavated in the rock that harbours several relics of interest,
like a tray of quartz in which, according to the legend, was delivered
the head of San Juan Baptist to Salomé. Also there is a dish of
crystal that the queen of Saba gave Solomon, which was utilized in the
Last Supper.
