Switzerland
Switzerland is, despite its reputation for very high prices,
one of the most visited countries in Europe, although the majority
of visitors were satisfied with the most picturesque clichés:
the idyllic snow-capped Alps with its cheese and chocolate, Heidi
and the Matterhorn. The truth is that the views are unforgotten
both in winter and summer, transport are varied and picturesque
and though it has high prices are not much higher than those of
Germany or Britain.
The Swiss are extremely courteous and all speak English in addition
to one of the four official languages: German, French, Italian
and Rhaeto-Romance.
In relation to its landscapes all of them are impressive, although
the most visited area is the Bernese Oberland, which brings together
a number of peaks and villages on the slopes. The more lush Alps
are in the south, near the Zermatt resort, from where it is possible
to access to the country's most distinctive mountain, the Matterhorn.
To the southeast are the isolated valleys of Graubünden and
the famous tourist resorts of Saint Moritz and Davos.
In relation to its cities, Zurich, German-speaking has interesting
attractions and good nightlife. Moreover, it allows an easy access
to the tiny Liechtenstein. Basel and Bern, the capital, are quieter
cities. Both cities has an attractive historic center. Lucerne
is also an attractive city situated between mountains and lakes.
West francophone cities are on the shores of Lake Geneva. Highlighting
own Geneva and Lausanne.
South of the Alps, sunny Ticino seems a world apart from the
rest of the country, especially in Lugano and Locarno, Italian-speaking
resorts and filled with palm trees, with an atmosphere more akin
to the Mediterranean riverfront.
